LEARN OF ME I
Matt. 11:28 -29, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
The technical aspects of this scripture are ‘take my yoke’ and ‘learn of me’. When you have all round peace; all round peace that you cannot purchase with money, prosperity will come. Soundness of mind will come, progress will come, your health will blossom and your relationship with others will flourish.
The phrase ‘learn of me’ – Jesus is saying learn my ways. Learning is so fundamental to life that anyone who is not learning is actually not living. One of the strongest definitions of leadership is – leadership is learning to live. The essence of learning of Christ is so that you can be like him. Being like Christ is the greatest thing you can be as a Christian. This is the foundation of discipleship. A disciple is a disciplined follower of Christ; one whose lifestyle mirrors Christ. One in whom you can find Christ.
There are Christians everywhere but where are the disciples? One of the greatest problems in the Church today is finding those who are Christlike. ‘Becoming’ is a project but definitely not a one day project. It is a daily process, a learning process. Jesus’ prescription for discipleship is the cross. Take up your cross and follow me. Take up the cross and follow me. Walk hand in hand with me. As you walk with Christ, you will become more like him. Your consciousness will be tuned to his consciousness.
Another word I will like to emphasize in this scripture is ‘meek’. You can actually use a word to describe everybody. Oftentimes people see meekness as weakness. In the world, nobody wants to be meek because no one wants to be associated with weakness. Everybody wants to be strong and mighty and calling the shots. Even in the Church, meekness is becoming an endangered specie. I do not wish to arrogate to myself what I am not supposed to be and that is why I decline when people try to help me carry my Bible; I try to be very careful. It is so easy to become ‘a big man of God’ moving around with a large entourage. When such men of God are invited as guest ministers and they feel they were not properly introduced, they usually take offence.
The true meaning of meekness is nothing but power under Holy Ghost control. Jesus had so much power, the Son of God, yet he was meek. A lot of people could not even differentiate him from his disciples; someone needed to kiss him in order for those who arrested him to identify him. Just think about that. That is the Son of God, the One whom we ought to model our lives after. That is the pattern Son. If you compare this pattern to what is obtainable in the Church today, you will marvel. Why? Mr flesh is just too strong. The only thing that can tame it is the cross. That was why Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me”. Learn to visit the cross on a daily basis.
