Text: Matt. 6:31-34

“Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

The word to emphasize in this scripture is first. It is not enough to seek God, are you seeking him first? That is what matters. You can seek him as the 20th thing you are seeking. That is exactly how it is with many people; you can even seek him as the 100th thing. God takes note of this and he does not take it lightly. God is a spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. You can worship God anyhow, you can worship him anywhere but it is not anyhow you worship God that is acceptable. Also, it is not anywhere you worship him that is acceptable.

There is a way to worship God acceptably if you want him to endorse your worship. There are different types of needs: there are physiological needs, sociological needs, spiritual needs, as well as other needs. What you seek is actually what you love. What you place ahead as the object of your devotion has become your god and that is why it is very important for you to understand this. Whatever you place side by side God in your heart has become your idol. It is so easy to become an idolater even in the Church. It is so easy to slip into idolatry while thinking that you are still serving the living God.

Pray –

  • Dear Heavenly Father, I confess that I love you with all my heart. Grant me the grace never to place any other thing beside you in my heart. Make it impossible for me to worship you in the altar of Baal in Jesus’ name.
